The League Cup (Carabao Cup)

In a nutshell

The League Cup — currently sponsored by Carabao Energy Drink and officially called the Carabao Cup — is England's second domestic cup competition. Open to all 92 Football League clubs. Historically used by top clubs to give their younger or squad players a run-out, but still a genuinely competitive and popular trophy.

How It Works

Single-leg knockout ties through to a two-legged semi-final and a Wembley final in February/March. Premier League clubs enter in the second round. The competition runs through the autumn and winter — a different pace to The FA Cup.

How English Clubs Qualify

All 92 Football League clubs (Premier League plus Leagues One, Two and Three). No qualification needed.

English Clubs in 2025/26

Manchester City won the 2025/26 League Cup, beating Arsenal in the final — their 9th League Cup title and part of their domestic double in Guardiola’s farewell season.

Famous History

Most League Cup wins: Manchester City (9), Liverpool (10), Aston Villa (5), Chelsea (5), Nottingham Forest (4), Tottenham (4). Liverpool have won it more than anyone.
