WORLD CUP 2026

How England Qualified for the 2026 World Cup

Introduction

To get to the World Cup, every team (except the host nations) has to go through a qualifying competition. England’s qualifying campaign under Thomas Tuchel was remarkable — eight games, eight wins, zero goals conceded. Here’s how it happened.

The Qualifying Format

UEFA (the governing body for European football) organises qualifying into groups of four or five teams. The group winners and second-placed teams progress — either automatically or through play-offs. England were placed in Group K alongside Serbia, Albania, Latvia and Andorra.

The Results

March 2025: Albania 0-2 England (away), Latvia 0-3 England (away) — a perfect start

June 2025: Andorra 0-1 England (away)

September 2025: Andorra 2-0 England (home), Serbia 0-5 England (home) — a statement 5-0 thrashing sent a message to the world

October 2025: Latvia 0-5 England — England qualified with two games to spare

November 2025: Serbia 2-0 England (home), Albania 0-2 England (away) — perfect record complete

The Record

Final Group K standings: England — P8 W8 D0 L0, +22 goal difference, 24 points. They conceded zero goals across all eight games. No England side had ever had a perfect qualifying record before.

Captain Harry Kane scored in multiple games, further extending his all-time England scoring record. Gordon, Eze, Bellingham and others also contributed. England were consistently dominant without ever being complacent.

Why It Matters

The qualifying campaign mattered for two reasons. First, it confirmed England were in good shape tactically — Tuchel had a clear system and the players understood their roles. Second, it built confidence. Going into a World Cup unbeaten across your qualifying campaign, having scored freely and conceded nothing, creates genuine belief.
