Aston Villa are one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888 and one of England’s most historic clubs. They won the First Division seven times before the Premier League era and were champions of Europe in 1982 — beating Bayern Munich 1-0 in the European Cup final in Rotterdam. After decades in the middle of the pack, Villa were taken over by billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens in 2018 and the investment began to show. Promotion from The Championship in 2019 was followed by gradual improvement, and the appointment of Unai Emery in 2022 transformed them into genuine title and European contenders.
