Club History
Chelsea were founded in 1905 specifically to fill Stamford Bridge (the stadium existed first). For most of their history they were a fashionable but trophy-light London club. Roman Abramovich’s takeover in 2003 changed everything — in 19 years of ownership he spent over £1 billion and Chelsea won five Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and numerous other trophies. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government and forced to sell. American consortium BlueCo took over and have spent enormous sums — over £1 billion in just three transfer windows — in a controversial period of recruitment.
