Nottingham Forest are unique in English football — a club from a city of 300,000 that won the European Cup twice in consecutive seasons (1979 and 1980) under the legendary Brian Clough. That achievement — still remarkable today — makes Forest one of the few clubs outside the traditional “big” clubs to have won Europe’s top prize. After decades of decline, dropping as far as the third tier, Steve Cooper brought them back to the Premier League in 2022. New Greek owner Evangelos Marinakis has invested heavily — and controversially — resulting in two points deductions for PSR breaches.

The extraordinary comeback from the third tier to European competition
In the England World Cup squad and one of Forest’s most important players. Creative, direct and capable of brilliant individual moments. A local lad — from Stafford — who came through Wolves’ academy.
Nigerian international who has been one of Forest’s most clinical forwards. Goals have been crucial in keeping them in the Premier League.
The City Ground sits on the banks of the River Trent in Nottingham, looking across at Meadow Lane (Notts County’s ground). Capacity 30,602. One of the most atmospheric traditional English football grounds. The view from the main stand, looking across the Trent on a winter evening, is one of football’s most atmospheric settings.
First Division: 2. FA Cup: 2. League Cup: 4. European Cup: 2 (1979, 1980).
Derby County (the East Midlands derby — one of English football’s oldest and fiercest), Leicester City.
Final position: Around 14th-17th — survived relegation
Despite extraordinary managerial chaos — four managers in one season — Forest survived relegation. They also reached The Europa League semi-finals before losing to Aston Villa. A season that defied logic.
