Rio Ngumoha — The 17-Year-Old Who Just Made His England Debut

by Football Explained

Who Is Rio Ngumoha?

Rio Ngumoha is 17 years old. He plays as a left winger for Liverpool. He was born on 29 August 2008 — which means he is still a teenager by only the narrowest of margins. On 6 June 2026, he came off the bench at half-time in England’s pre-tournament friendly against New Zealand, and became the fifth-youngest player ever to represent England’s senior team.

His performance was bright and direct, creating chances with his pace and directness. England won 1-0.

Where Did He Come From?

Ngumoha started his youth career at Chelsea, where he was regarded as one of the most exciting young players in the country. In September 2024, Liverpool signed him — a significant coup for the club. He grew up watching Liverpool and the move felt right to him.

He made his Premier League debut this season and showed glimpses of real quality. His Champions League appearance against Qarabag — 23 minutes, aged 17 — showed Tuchel and others what he could do at a higher level.

Is He Going to the World Cup?

This is where it gets interesting — and a little sad. Ngumoha is travelling to the World Cup with the England squad. But he cannot play.

FIFA rules state that only players on the provisional release list — a longlist of up to 55 players submitted a month before the tournament — can play. Tuchel submitted his list before Ngumoha’s brilliant end-of-season form had fully emerged. He was not on it. So even if England suffer injuries before the tournament, Ngumoha cannot be drafted in as a replacement.

He is travelling as a training player — useful experience for the 17-year-old, but he will watch from the sidelines.

Why Does This Matter?

Because Ngumoha is the kind of player people will be talking about for years. At 17, he is one of the most exciting young talents England have produced in a generation. His World Cup moment will come — possibly multiple times.

New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has already spoken about his commitment to developing young players. Ngumoha is exactly the kind of player who could flourish under that philosophy. Watch this space.
