FOOTBALL EXPLAINED

The Football Calendar — When Does Everything Happen?

Introduction

Football runs almost all year round. Once you know the rhythm of the calendar, the whole sport makes more sense. Here’s a plain-English guide to what happens when.

June-July: The World Cup / Summer Break / Transfer Window

This is the one window in the year where club football is quiet. The summer transfer window opens and the biggest deals are done. Managers are hired and fired. If there’s a major international tournament (like this year’s World Cup), it dominates June and July.

Late July — August: Pre-Season and the Community Shield

Club football returns. Teams play pre-season friendly matches — these are practice games that don’t count for anything, used to get players fit and test tactics. The Community Shield is a one-off match between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners, traditionally played at Wembley in early August. It’s not a major trophy but it’s the traditional curtain-raiser.

August: The Premier League Season Begins

The new Premier League season starts in mid-August. From here, clubs play every weekend (and often midweek too) until the following May.

September — October: European Competition Begins

The Champions League, Europa League and Conference League group stages or league phases begin in September. English clubs compete on Thursday nights (Europa/Conference) and Tuesday/Wednesday nights (Champions League) on top of their Premier League commitments.

January: Winter Transfer Window

The January transfer window opens on 1 January and closes on 1 February. A busy month of transfer rumours, deals and announcements.

January — March: FA Cup and EFL Cup

The domestic cup competitions are in full swing. The EFL Cup final is typically held in late February or March. The FA Cup has its quarter-finals and semi-finals in March and April.

March and November: International Breaks

Several times a year, the Premier League pauses for international breaks — periods when players go away to represent their national teams in World Cup qualifying matches, friendlies or tournaments. These breaks frustrate club fans but are essential for national teams to prepare.

April — May: The Run-In

“The run-in” is the final stretch of the Premier League season — roughly the last 8-10 games. This is when title races, European qualification battles and relegation fights are decided. The tension is at its highest.

May: Season's End and European Finals

The Premier League season ends on the same day for all clubs (so nobody has an unfair advantage by knowing their rivals’ results first). European finals — FA Cup, EFL Cup, Champions League, Europa League, Conference League — are all played in May.
